The rival answers

PositionClaim
Metaphysical realismThe disputes are substantive; one side is right about the world
Logical positivismMetaphysical claims are unverifiable and therefore meaningless
Carnapian deflationismSuch questions are internal to a framework; the external version is a choice of language
QuietismThe disputes dissolve on analysis; there is nothing to settle
VerbalismThe parties mean different things and only appear to disagree
Neo-Aristotelian revivalThe disputes are substantive and concern structure and grounding

△ contested A contested question: philosophers disagree about the answer, or about how the question should be framed. The book sets out each side and takes none.
