About
How to cite Coordinates of Thought
Ready-made references for our in-depth pages in APA, MLA, Chicago, BibTeX and RIS, and what to expect when you cite us.
On this page
Coordinates of Thought is a reference and learning site. You are welcome to cite it in essays, lessons, theses and books. This page explains how, and what our pages are and are not.
Which pages to cite
- Pages that are ready to cite show a Cite this page section at the end. Today these are the in-depth thinker profiles, which name their sources, list their primary texts and carry a "last updated" date.
- Other pages (conversations in the community, Journal essays, short entries) can be quoted, but cite them as what they are: a member's post or an essay by its named author.
- For academic work, cite the primary texts and the scholarly sources a page lists as well. Our pages are a starting point and a map of the debate, not a substitute for them.
What a citation contains
- Author: Coordinates of Thought Editors (the team that writes and maintains the page).
- Title of the page, and Coordinates of Thought as the website.
- Date: the date the page was last updated. Pages are revised as we correct and improve them, so APA and MLA also ask for the date you read it.
- Address: the page's permanent address. We keep addresses stable; if a page ever has to move, the old address forwards to the new one.
The styles we provide
Each in-depth page gives the reference in APA (7th edition), MLA (9th edition), Chicago (17th edition, bibliography form), BibTeX and RIS, with a Copy button for each. The BibTeX and RIS files can be imported into Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote and similar reference managers. Pages also carry standard citation tags, so the Zotero browser button can save them directly.
An APA example, for a page last updated on 27 October 2026:
Coordinates of Thought Editors. (2026, October 27). Mary Wollstonecraft. Coordinates of Thought. Retrieved [date you read it], from https://coordinatesofthought.com/thinker/mary-wollstonecraft/
How our pages are checked
- Every statement on an in-depth page is checked against the sources the page lists before it is published, and corrected where it was wrong. Where sources disagree (on a date, for example), the page says so instead of choosing silently.
- Our pages are not peer-reviewed in the academic sense. Our full review standard, including a reading by a subject specialist, is set out in our editorial standards; we will say on a page when it has had that reading.
- We correct mistakes in the open. If you find one, please tell the editors.
Teachers and students
You may link to any page and quote short passages with a reference. For classroom handouts, please link to the page rather than copying it whole, so that readers always see the latest, corrected version.
