Follow-up from my daughter: if every choice depends on conditions, is anyone free?
Its coordinates: 1.7 Free Will and Determinism
Yesterday you helped me explain dependent origination to my fourteen-year-old. Thank you again. She liked the rice.
Then she asked the next question, as I said she would. If everything arises from conditions, then my choices also arise from conditions: my mood, what I ate, what my friends said, what my parents taught me. So am I free, or am I only the place where conditions meet?
I answered that the Buddha taught that intention is kamma, so intention matters and we are responsible. She said that only shows the Buddha wanted us to be responsible, not that we are free.
I think she is going to be a lawyer.
What would a Buddhist teacher say to her? And is it the same problem the Western philosophers argue about, or a different one?
