Wu wei for burnt-out founders: what did Laozi actually mean?
After Stoicism, I've been reading the Daodejing. One idea that hits hard is wu wei, usually translated "non-action" or "effortless action". Chapter 48 says that in pursuing learning you add something every day, but in pursuing the Dao you let something go every day, until you reach non-action, and yet nothing is left undone.
In startup culture, everything is effort: hustle, grind, optimisation. Wu wei sounds like the opposite, but the "nothing is left undone" part suggests it isn't laziness.
Chapter 17 also says the best rulers are those the people hardly know exist. That reads like a description of a good manager.
Am I reading this as self-help again? What does wu wei mean philosophically?
