What it is

A collection of essays, several revised from earlier journal articles, by the Argentine-born philosopher who taught in the United States. Lugones asks how people who face several oppressions at once, such as women of colour and lesbians, can resist and build coalitions without being forced into a single identity. Her best-known essay, 'Playfulness, "World"-Travelling, and Loving Perception', argues that many people, especially outsiders, move between different social 'worlds' and are different selves in each; travelling to another's world with playfulness rather than arrogance is a way of loving and understanding them. 'Purity, Impurity, and Separation' contrasts a logic of purity, which splits people into neat categories, with a logic of curdling, the mixed, impure condition of the mestiza. Other essays treat ethnocentric racism, pluralist feminism, hard-to-handle anger, community and home, and, in the closing essay, the tactical strategies of the street-walker who theorises from movement through the city.

Why read it

It offers original tools, such as world-travelling and curdling, for thinking about multiple identity and coalition, and it shaped later intersectional and decolonial feminism.

Where to start

Begin with 'Playfulness, "World"-Travelling, and Loving Perception', then read 'Purity, Impurity, and Separation'.
