Luoyang

  • Luoyang

East Asia · Chinese, Buddhist

Luoyang, on the Luo river in the Yellow River plain, served as a capital for several Chinese courts. In 689 the Huayan Buddhist master Fazang lectured here on the Flower Garland Sutra and later worked with the Khotanese monk Śikṣānanda on a new translation of it, under the patronage of Wu Zhao, China's only female emperor. Under the Song the brothers Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi lived here, discussing ideas with their neighbour Shao Yong; after 1072 Cheng Hao returned to Luoyang and spent most of his time studying and teaching the classics with his brother. Later Confucians honoured them as 'the two Chengs'.
