In the Kashmir Valley, around the year 1000, Abhinavagupta wrote some of the most studied works of Sanskrit philosophy and aesthetics. Britannica records him as flourishing in 1014 and calls him an outstanding representative of the 'recognition' (Pratyabhijñā) school of Kashmiri Śaiva monism, which holds that Śiva, the individual self and the universe are essentially one. His works include the Tantrāloka and the Abhinavabhāratī, a commentary on the classical theory of drama. India's nomination to UNESCO dates his life to 940-1015, and in 2023 manuscripts of his works were added to the Memory of the World register. The marker is placed at Srinagar, the valley's main city.
