Hippo Regius
- Hippo Regius
Also Hippo
Hippo Regius, a port of Roman North Africa on the coast of what is now eastern Algeria, was Augustine's home for the last four decades of his life. Born inland at Thagaste in 354, he studied at Madauros and Carthage, taught rhetoric and converted in Milan in 386, then returned to Africa. In 391 he was ordained a priest at Hippo, apparently against his will, and about 396 he succeeded the local bishop. He died on 28 August 430 while the Vandals besieged the city. His writings became a central authority for Latin Christian thought.
