Europe · Modern European, Continental

Basel, on the Rhine, combined a university with busy printing houses such as Johann Froben's. Desiderius Erasmus lived here from 1521, working with Froben, until the city turned Protestant in 1529 and he left for Freiburg. Friedrich Nietzsche held the chair of classical philology at the university from 1869 until illness forced him to resign in 1879. Hermann Hesse lived in Basel as a child and later worked in its book trade, and Karl Jaspers moved to the University of Basel in 1948 and died in the city in 1969.
