Traditions: Analytic
Arnold Berleant is an American philosopher, long at Long Island University, and a founding figure of environmental aesthetics. Against the traditional model of detached, disinterested contemplation, he developed an aesthetics of engagement: aesthetic experience is active, bodily and participatory, involving the whole person immersed in an environment or work. The idea applies to art, to landscapes and to the built and everyday environments people live in.
Key ideas
- Aesthetic experience is engaged and participatory, not detached contemplation.
- Perceiver and object form a continuous aesthetic field rather than a subject facing an object.
- Environments, natural and built, are experienced by the whole body in multisensory ways.
- The aesthetic is part of ordinary life, not confined to museums and concert halls.
